- NoS synopsis: Szczyglowice, a new colliery in Poland, is more a community than just a mine
NCB Commentary - In Poland they’re still opening new mines. Syczyglowice is already turning out 600 tons a day and is due to produce 9000 a day by 1970. That’s 3 million tons a year - for a hundred years ahead.
And this isn’t just a coalmine - it’s a community. Experienced miners from other pits started up the colliery, and men entirely new to mining are being trained. 3 years ago there was nothing here: today there are 4 1/2 thousand men - and everything they need for modern living.
From this elegant office, the manager runs the mine - and has created the community.
For miners and their families he has built shops. There’s already one school, with another building.
And a health centre is going up to look after the welfare of everyone.
Minerds who work at Syczyglowice get accomodation right by the colliery in blocks of apartments like this one for bachelors, and in houses for families.
A mining family this size needs feeding. So there’s a farm, run by the colliery. The greenhouses are the versatile manager’s own design.
And there’s room for recreation - a park and lakes, which actually double as the colliery reservoirs.
How about this? A dance floor on a tree, with children’s playground underneath.
The men of Syczyglowice and their families are proud of their community. They’ve come a long way in 3 short years. - Keywords
