- Summary
- BFI synopsis: The supplies of heat and hot water to dwelling houses from boilers at Silksworth Colliery, County Durham.
NCB Commentary - The harvest is brought in from the fields around Silksworth Colliery. It’s autumn, and a reminder of winter round the corner is the smokeless chimney of a brand new boiler house.
The boiler house is in the very yard of Silksworth, and only 400 yards away Sunderland Corporations Gilly law housing development is nearing completion. The flats have been built by the most advanced techniques and there’s nothing more up to date than the way in which they’re heated.
The whole housing scheme is warmed by group heating - and the heart of the system is the new automatic boiler house.
Here, 3,500 tons a year of Silksworth coal will be delivered pneumatically and burned smokelessly.
Hot water from the three boiler units is pumped underground direct to the flats. Tenants will pay only for the heat they use. Every flat has its own meter.
The children at Gilly Law will grow up into a warmer, cleaner world. - Keywords
