- Summary
- NoS synopsis: Colliery electrician is week-end flier.
NCB Commentary - Thorseby Colliery, one of Nottingham’s million and half ton a year mines.
Down there underground or in the electrician’s shop, Keith Smith spends his working hours maintaining the intricate electrical gear essential to modern mining.
But at the weekends Keith really knows how to rise above it.
He’s a member of the local flying club, one of the increasing number of men and women who take to the air in their spare time.
Today he’s taking up the club’s Auster - the plane he likes flying the best.
A check on the controls and instruments and he’s ready to start up.
Clearance from the control tower, and Keith can begin to roll. Up above te Nottinghamshire landscape, there are plenty of mining landmarks to fix his position.
It looks as if Keith can’t keep away from Thoresby where he works, but it’s a convenient turning point for his landing approach.
Flying this way costs people like Keith about £3 an hour. Amateur flyers all over the country agree that this is a wonderful way to get your kicks on budget terms. - Keywords
