NCB Commentary - Just outside Nottingham in spacious grounds stands the University’s School of Agriculture.
The University looks forward to the future - in its new buildings and indeed in the nature of its work.
In a world where two thirds of the population are undernourished, research into the techniques of agriculture is of first importance.
But to grow plants and improve crops you need warmth. These greenhouses get it: So do the cattle, part of the herd maintained by the school of Agriculture.
Source of all the warmth is the new boiler house, where the University has installed a group of the latest coal fired boilers.
Why coal? Because Nottingham is right in the coalfield and because the experimental crops would be affected by sulphur fumes - and they won’t be troubled by deposits from this virtually smokeless chimney.
The boiler system works automatically, and not even the ash is wasted.
It’s taken out ont the farm to be used in road-making. Warm air from the system heats the laboratories in the new block, and the lecture rooms.
Radiators keep the study-bedrroms comfortable.
Year round, day and night the new boiler house is contributing to the work and the amenities of some of the agronomists and farmers of tomorrow. - Keywords
