Summary
NoS synopsis: Yorkshire miners who are sea fishermen
NCB Commentary - Yorkshire miner Alan Ball in Whitby. He’s a call to make on Mrs. Young whose prepared his fishing bait.
Then it’s to sea.
With another boat-load of fishing miners astern the convoy heads out into the North Sea.
Alf Ball - on the right in sou-wester - bought the coble with his mates from Allerton Bywater Colliery.
During the summer they fish most week-ends.
A modest one is landed by Alan up front - sorry for’rard.
Now the weather has brightened a bit and the cobles move farther out to fresh ground.
But it’s clearly not a day for big fish.
If your idea of heaven is to sit in an open boat and await the promising tug on the end of a 100yds of nylon line - this is your life.
Back on shore, the day’s catch is stored in the boat of the car.
At home in Castlefore the fish will be shared out among friends and neighbours - and tomorrow the fishing miners will be back on shift.
