- Summary
- BFI synopsis: Britain’s top mining student, George Wilson.
NCB Commentary - Four mornings a week George Wilson, a 23-year old electician, drives to Clara Vale Colliery, Co. Durham.
Tom Dodds and George began their mining careers at the same time - Tom, as an apprentice electrician at Clara Vale, and George, working on the screens at nearby Emma Colliery.
Six months later George put in for training as an electrician, and was accepted.
It was under men like Rob Beck that George completed his apprenticeship.
At the pit George does most of his work underground.
One day and one evening a week Tom and George are released to attend courses at Durham Technical College.
But most of George’s studying is done at home. Next to Mrs. Wilson and Deborah, books have pride of place in their Chopwell home. As well as getting time-off from the pit to study, George gets release from household chores - to study some more.
In the final honours examination of the Association of Mining, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, George’s marks averaged over 90% - George Wilson is Britain’s top mining student of 1964.
