- Summary
- BFI synopsis: Yorkshire miner Arthur Holland, who refereed the 1964 F.A. Cup Final at Wembley.
NCB Commentary - And now to focus on a local Yorkshire game using a round ball; instead of an egg-shaped one.
The referee is Arthur Holland. He works underground at Barnsley Main Colliery and his eye is on the ball in more senses than one - below and above ground.
At the Holland home in Cope Street, Barnsley, Mrs. Holland, the washing and ironing done, packs a bad for Arthur - who’s no ordinary ref. He has an international reputation and he wears his mantle modestly. There’s no forgetting his whistle and coin - heads on one side tails the other.
Tonight Arthur has some cronies round - mostly fellow referees - for a little send-off party.
Daughter Jennifer says goodnight and next morning it’s goodbye for Arthur himself - off by train to London.
This time tomorrow he’ll be watched by 100,000 vociferous spectators - millions at their tv. sets - as he referees the Cup Final at Wembley.
As all the world now knows the score was Preston North End 2 West Ham United 3 - Arthur Holland said so. - Keywords
