Summary
BFI synopsis: Newbridge Football Club, South Wales.
NCB Commentary - Newbridge Rugby Club in South Wales is made-up almost entirely of miners.
This Saturday morning game is against Rugby - at rugby, but at Newbridge, if you see what we mean.
Some of the beef that goes into winning coal comes in handy on the rugger field.
Newbridge have the ball and it’s Elliott Williams, an NCB storekeeper from Tredegar, who makes it three points for the home team - but it was left unconverted.
In the second half John Worwood tore away to clinch an unconverted try for the Welshmen. And Worwood again touched down.
The night before the game there was a get-together in the Newbridge modern clubhouse.
With Club President Aubrey Jones, old-timers Trevor Williams and William Thomas - both veteran internationals - chat with young players Danny Jenkins and Ron Hamer about past games.
But this is John Dawes’ night and tomorrow afternoon he has a date in Cardiff to play for Wales against France.
John is presented with a blazer by Newbridge’s Captain Ken Broder.
And so with victory of 11 to 8 over Rugby under their belts, it’s into the coach and off to Cardiff to keep an eye on their man Dawes.
The atmosphere of a big international rugby match is electric - but the rules are the same as on the local ground.
When play begins a sea of fans send up a roar, which to the players, French and Welsh alike, sounds like breakers on the beach.
When the final whistle blew it was France 11 - Wales 11.
