Summary
BFI synopsis: pit ponies at the final Horse of the Year Show at Harringay Arena.
NCB Commentary - For the last time London’s Harringay Arena is the scene of the Horse of the Year Show and, as usual, pit ponies from Britain’s collieries are represented.
Whiskey on the left has come from Ellington, and Dime from Granville pit. Albert Rutter is in charge of 72 ponies at Ellington.
Bob Harding grooms Brock, 11 years old, who comes form Brodsworth Main.
In the big ring at Harringay the heavy horses show their paces to traditional English tunes.
Show jumping, of course, is one of the big attractions at every Horse of the Year Show. The finest in the country come to town to compete in the many classes.
Back at Harringay the big personality parade illustrates horses of every breed and size. Here’s the Duke of Edinburgh’s polo pony, Bettaway. This is a 26 year olf Arab, now retired, bought by Bertram Mills in Yugoslavia. 12 year old Springfield Dude is Britain’s champion barge horse.
The pit ponies parade with the Area in darkness.
On show to the Harringay crowds with this high stepping harness pony and this London coster’s donkey, the pit ponies of Britain’s collieries are in good company indeed.
