- Summary
- BFI synopsis: the work of the Coal Utilisation Council (CUC) and the opening of their new information centre at Nottingham.
NCB Commentary - This is a London school class in domestic heating and the use of coal. The pupils have come back to school as part of their professional work: there are classes for builders, coal merchants, architects, appliance demonstrators.
Here, at the Coal Utilisation Council’s training centre, they’re brushing up their knowledge of the fundamentals of how coal burns and why. The lecturer is doing the old trick of producing coke and coal gas from a clay pipe.
Ther there are practical classes, discussions of the most suitable forms of heating for modern houses, so that the people who deal with the public can really have a sound technical knowledge behind them. Architects ge the cooperation of the Council in designing houses that are going to use fuel sensibly and economically.
In Nottingham recently, the Council’s new information centre was opened. Here, the public can look at many of the modern solid-fuel appliances, and compare them side by side. By means of simple demonstrations like this, you can see at a glance how the heat from a stove is thrown out - and where it’s going.
There’s always a range of appliances on show, from water heating and cooking to the new continuous burning open fires. Wherever you see the Council’s yellow and black sign, walk in. Dealers who show the sign are there to help you. - Researcher Comments
