- Summary
- NoS Summary - Durham division’s boxing finals in Newcastle upon Tyne.
BFI synopsis: Includes middle-weight fight L. Simpson v J.F. Parsons; welter-weight D. Lumley v P. Kelly; heavy-weight W. Carr v J. Wilkinson.
NCB Commentary - The place - Newcastle. The occasion - Durham Division’s amateur boxing finals. Nearly seven o’clock, and most of the crowd of miners and their families are already in ... come on lady - you don’t want to miss anything.
One of the evening’s needle bouts was the middleweight tussle between last year’s holder, Parsons of Dean and Chapter, and Simpson, of Brusselton pit. Parsons is fighting in the black vest, at 11 stone 11. But it wasn’t a bout that came up to expectations. The first round the boys were mainly sparring for openings, and there were warnings from the referee for holding.
Round Two. A bit livelier, with both men taking advantage of the openings. Parsons, the holder looks well up on points.
Into the third and final round, with the fight still open. Perhaps Parsons was too eager, but twice he was warned for hitting low. And that cost him the bout - and his title - as a jubilant Simpson sweeps across the ring to console him.
Now here’s a light welterweight bout at ten stone. Kelly wears the dark vest in the blue corner. He’s from Brandon - Lumley, his opponent, is from Langley Park. It’s a tearaway scrap, this one, with both boys swapping as many punches as they can. Kelly’s down! Lumley goes down, too, and takes a short count, only to find himself in dead trouble. Kelly’s right after him and pummels him mercilessly. Down goes Lumley again, and this time it’s for good. Kelly waits to make sure, but he’s well on his way into the Northern Finals.
Now for the heavies. Wilkinson, of New Brancepeth, in striped sleeves, meets Carr of Silksworth in a clash that’s more neat than anything else. The first round starts off with wild swings and haymakers on both sides. A lucky one from Carr sends Wilkinson down for a short count, but he’s up again.
With so much energy flying around, the one minute intervals seem short. Already in the second round the boys are slowing up. And by the third, some of the customers are wondering if it’s boxing they’ve come to see or wrestling, which is this hall’s usual fare. But after all this there wasn’t much doubt - Carr, who had the advantage in weight, is the winner. The bigger they come, the harder they fall ... and we’ll be seeing some more at the National Finals in Nottingham on May 17th. - Researcher Comments
