Career
Tony Thompson was a director, employed early in his career by the Crown Film Unit [qv] to work on Mining Review. As such, he worked solely on the first six issues, before production was taken over by DATA [qv]. His credits include, ‘A PIT IS REBORN: 1. NANTGARW’ in Mining Review 1st Year No.11 of July 1948, ‘OUR MR. THERM’ in 2nd Year No.9 of May 1949, and ‘OLYMPIC POSSIBLE’ in 5th Year No.10 of June 1952. His final Mining Review credit is for ‘DERBY RAM’ in 6th Year No.9 of May 1953.
Later, Thompson had a successful career with British Transport Films [qv], directing several of their documentary films including, ‘ELIZABETHAN EXPRESS’ (1954) and ‘ANY MAN’S KINGDOM’ (1956). He also worked occasionally on their cinemagazine, Cinegazette. His only recorded credit for this series is for ‘DO YOU REMEMBER’ in No.14 of 1955.
