Summary
British Pathe synopsis: "Our first glimpse of these great granite quarries was from the "air line" Aerial shot of quarries. Men at work, machinery, rockface etc. "But reaching the ground." M/S of a man pressing the plunger on a detonator. L/S of explosion and crumbling rocks. L/S showing man standing beside large granite boulders. "Splitting the huge blocks is a job for steel drills and wedges - (and the muscles of the granite men)." M/S of two workers standing on top of a block of granite drilling into it with hand drills. The men place pins into the holes in the granite. L/S of four men standing around the block as one hammers the pins in. The men then use metal poles to lever the block apart. The pins presumably weaken the granite. High angle shot of half a dozen men at work in the open air breaking up granite with hand tools. "Some blocks become fancy columns" C/U of a machine which carves the granite into column shapes. A dissolve condenses time to show the finished column. "Nothing is wasted - the smaller stones are made into road sets and even the chips are used for road surfaces." High angle shot of the landscape - small huts are scattered around. C/U of man breaking a small block of granite in two. "Their part done, the granite men pass on their product to the carters - " Two men stand in the foreground of a L/S showing workers at the bottom of the quarry - the men are possibly foremen. Horses draw carts full of granite. High angle shot of the horses moving along a country road pulling carts laden with rocks.
