Summary
NoS Summary - how long it took a woman to get ready for a date in olden times
British Pathe synopsis: "Back to the days of buggy rides, when garters were supporters, and not a traffic problem." Extreme C/U of woman taking rag curlers out of her hair. C/U of her feet in very prim shoes. She drops a rag on the floor then picks it up again. M/S of woman primping her hair - she is dressed in an old fashioned lace dress. "This was the time when a woman didn’t undress for a dress affair." The woman who has been doing her hair is joined by two maids. They both wear old fashioned style clothes. One of the maids carries a corset. C/U of two of the maid and her mistress looking at the corset. They pull at it to show how it is joined with strings. M/S of the other woman laying out clothes on a chair. "By three o’clock there was more excitement than with a fire alarm." C/U of the first woman having her hair done by her maid. They admire her look in the mirror. C/U of a large hairpiece being pinned to the back of the mistress’ head. C/U of the ornate hairdo. She primly touches her hair and looks demure. "4 p.m. "Old Ironside." M/S of the woman being strapped into her corset. Her two friends lace her in. They yank the laces really tight! "5 p.m. What a hustle and bustle..." M/S of the woman having her bustle attached. "By six o’clock the sheikh of the horsehair sofa had arrived." M/S of smartly dressed man sitting in an antechamber waiting for his date. M/S of the two maids arranging the skirt of their mistress. They fluff out her bustle bow. "By 7 p.m. Handsome Hector had set a new non-stop endurance record." C/U of her beau looking bored - he yawns. "Primping" took a couple of hours of course." C/U of our heroine looking wistful as her dress is primped. She puts her hand to her head as if feeling faint and is handed the smelling salts - she is much revived! A maid at her feet continues to fuss with the bottom of her skirts. M/S of Hector standing up as his date is brought out to him by the maids. A cape is put around her shoulders and they leave.
