Summary
COI synopsis: London Line investigated the face behind the flame; and we discovered in one London factory alone the whole history of candle making from the beginning: perfect candles hand made by a process which has not changed for hundreds of years, through to the most sophisticated machinery providing literally millions of candles for world-wide distribution. We also found that in its modern form this old-established industry has discovered by-products which have given essential help to many other apparently unconnected activities - from the motor industry to survival kits for explorers. So the candle still burns, its light as beautiful as ever, and in an emergency still as vital.
Researcher Comments
Features embossed candles intended for West Africa. Uses substantial footage from the COI’s "This Week In Britain, No. 954’ programme.
