Summary
COI synopsis: Water means life for myriads of creatures. It means life and danger for man. This programme examines how we can keep a check on the under-water world: and safely explore it at the same time. A weed-choked river will die - oxygen-starved, stagnant, its flow to the sea arrested. Yet weed is food and a roof for the river’s inhabitants, so it must be detroyed selectively - but how? Amazingly, the answer came from the sea - seaweed. Mixing seaweed extract with ordinary weedkiller, forms chemical strings that will festoon only those weeds that need to be destroyed. A river’s life can be saved, by using one water plant to destroy another.
