- Summary
- COI synopsis: Water means life for myriads of creatures. It means life and danger for man. This programme examines how we can keep a check on the under-water world: and safely explore it at the same time. A barnacle clinging to a rock looks harmless enough, but masses of them welded to the hull of a ship creates drag - increasing fuel bills by as much as 35%. Copper kills barnacles - but its a pricey poison. Now, British scientists have a cheap and deadly answer. They wove fine strands of copper into a mesh and embedded it in a tough plastic - it’s powerful enough to keep barnacles off a North Sea oil rig!
