- Summary
- COI synopsis: Novel forms of photography that are making our society safer, is the theme of this week’s programme. Infra-red cameras, activated by heat rather than light. Image intensifiers that can boost low light levels, allowing us to see defects that were once invisible. A way of revealing unexpected dangers in the jet engine; in high voltage power cables and providing an instant check after heart surgery. High voltage power lines emanate heat. Heat which can destroy the electrical insulation of the line. Blackouts and powercuts, affecting the safety of large sections of the community would follow. But now, an infra-red camera is used to scan these lines and detect potential danger areas before they become a hazard.
