DESCRIPTION: The 197th Derby Stakes was reputed to be the richest ever and thousands flocked to Epsom Downs to see the RaceFrom Movietone’s archives we glimpse the first filmed Derby - 1896, when the race was won by the Prince of Wales’ horse ‘Persimmon’This year’s hot favourite ‘Wollow’, did not manage to take a place, to the relief of the ‘bookies’The winner was ‘EMPERY’ an American owned colt, whose jockey was Lester Piggott.
