Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Remembrance. DESCRIPTION: Is Remembrance Day an anachronism in a modern world? It is time it was either drastically modified or the ceremonies finished with in favour of a day of personal, private mourning? As these questions are being asked, particularly by generations which have never known the challenge of war, we accompany the veterans of Walcheren on a sentimental journey to the Dutch Island they liberated, exactly 25 years agoAt Westminster Abbey, we join men of the Gurkhas, whose role is unique in British military history, as they pay tribute to their founder, Lord Kitchener. Their selfless spirit of service serves to highlight the dilemma of modern times when such ideals are often claimed to be part of an outworn ideologyWhat then is the future of Remembrance Day?We present, on this Fiftieth Anniversary of the First Remembrance Sunday - AN IMPRESSION IN COLOUR of the Garden of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey and the ceremonies at the CenotaphWe leave you to judge if this is merely a mournful national pageant with no place in the 1970’s, or a Nation’s way of dedicating itself to preserving the peace, won at such sacrifice.
