Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Return of the Sea Goddess (In Colour). DESCRIPTION: The last time the Queen visited New Zealand, she was likened by the Maoris to the ‘White Heron of the Single Flight’. Now it was as their mythological ‘Sea Goddess’ that she returned. On their arrival at the Bay of Islands, Her Majesty and Prince Philip were welcomed by the Governor General and Lady Furgusson. Their arrival took place on Waitangi Day - the anniversary of the signing of the treaty in 1840, when Maori chiefs acknowledged their allegiance to Queen Victoria. Now the Maoris were looking forward to welcoming Queen Victoria’s great, great granddaughter to their homeland for the second time. As the treaty has never been put into the statute books, it’s very much a personal agreement between the Maori people and their Sovereign. SHOTLIST: Key scene (fade in).
