Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Boxing - England V Russia. DESCRIPTION: Amateur boxing at Wembley, and let’s hope it wasn’t a fore-taste of England’s performance in the Empire Games later this month! Grigoriev, fighting Peter Bennyworth in the Bantamweight bout, scored one of Russia’s 8 victories. We won only two. Heavyweight Len Hobbs, a crane-driver from Battersea, was no match for Abramov, ex-European champion and six-times Russian titleholder. The Englishman went down in the first round, and the Russian scored a rather ponderous points advantage. Now, the Lightweight fireworks of Russian champion Nikonorov against Brian Whelan, who beat McTaggart in this year’s ABA Championships. Whelan went on to score one of England’s two successes.
