- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: River Runs Uphill. DESCRIPTION: The tides along the Bay of Fundy, on Canada’s Eastern seaboard, are the world’s highest, rising and falling 55 feet every 6 hours. This tidal-bore on the Petitcodiac River is one of the results. Tides have scoured the rocks into curious forms, known locally as the Sentinels, which have become a considerable tourist attraction. Most fascinating of all are the Reversing Falls Rapids at the mouth of the St John River. At low tide, the river gushes out through a gorge, making navigation impossible. Gradually, as the ocean rises, the run-out slackens off. Then comes the calm, when river and ocean balance. Now, ships can pass through safely. As the tide continues rising, the river actually reverses its flow and the effects can be seen 100 miles inland! SHOTLIST: Key scene. GV mouth of Petitcodiac River.
