MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Congo Celebrates. DESCRIPTION: Down came the Belgian flag in Leopoldville, capital of the Belgian Congo. A few days, in fact, in advance of independence! Mr Patrice Lumumba, elected as Prime Minister of the new Congo Republic, received congratulations from members of both Houses of Parliament. So, one more African country becomes a Sovereign State. King Baudouin of the Belgians had accepted an invitation to attend the celebrations, but long before he arrived, celebrations were being prepared, and everyone was out and dressed in their very best.
