Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: De Gaulle’s Tour. DESCRIPTION: General de Gaulle’s tour of overseas French possessions seemed to have been popular with most of the people out there. His friendly approach earned him a warm personal welcome. At some places, there were demands for independence. It was during his absence, abroad, that sabotage on a big scale broke out in France. The blaze at the Mourepiane petrol depot was the most spectacular example. The oil blazed for two days, and all but one of the fourteen storage tanks were destroyed. Seventeen firemen were injured, not killed, as originally reported. Believed to be the work of Algerian rebels, it was clearly intended to prove that the rebellion is far from over. SHOTLIST: General de Gaulle’s tour of overseas French possessions (notably in West Africa) seems to have been popular with most of the people out there. His friendly approach and the very fact, that the head of the French Government was paying a visit, earned him a warm personal welcome. At some places, there were demands for independence. But the General himself, to judge by these pictures is evidently held in high esteem, by white residents and the local population. He has certainly been indefatigable, in his travels, and visits; since being called to power. It was during his absence, abroad, that sabotage on a big scale broke out, in France. The blaze, at the Mourepiane petrol depot near Marseille, was the most spectacular example. The oil blazed, for two days; before it was brought under control. And all but one of the fourteen storage tanks were destroyed. The casualty list was put at seventeen firemen injured: not killed; as originally reported. Believed to be the work of Algerian rebels, it was clearly intended to prove that the rebellion is far from over. DE GAULLE’S TOUR - CARD 74812 De Gaulle and party on plane steps.
