- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Britain Wins Wightman Cup. DESCRIPTION: The cup had been America’s since 1930. Anne Haydon’s encounter with Mimi Arnold gave victory to Anne. Shirley Bloomer had been out of luck, but her two singles defeats (by Miss Gibson and Mrs Knode) were brilliantly retrieved by Wightman Cup colleagues. Spectators, watching 17-year-old Christine Truman and Althea Gibson, could hardly have expected Christine to beat the coloured American girl, last year’s Wimbledon champion. But: game, set and match to Miss Truman. The Duchess of Kent presented the trophy to Mrs Halford, the non-playing captain. This was Britain’s first win in 28 years. SHOTLIST: MS Wightman cup.
