Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: France in Turmoil. DESCRIPTION: Monsieur Pflimlin arrived at the Elysee to tender his resignation as Prime Minister of France. President Coty refused to accept his resignation until a new Government leader had been found. Corsica followed Algeria’s lead, by setting up a Committee of Public Safety. General Leather Nose Tomazo received a tumultuous welcome. In Corsica and Algeria the cry was De Gaulle. In Constantine, an important French Algerian town, the crowded streets bore witness to the same enthusiastic fervour for a new regime. But in Paris, there was another demonstration: a procession in protest against a take-over by de Gaulle. Three former Prime Ministers, and a number of Socialists and Communists took part. The threat of civil war was President Coty’s final warning to the French Assembly. And he said he would resign as President if they did not accept de Gaulle’s leadership. The General has agreed to form a Government. SHOTLIST: Monsieur Pflimlin arrives at the Elysee to tender his resignation as PM of France. Pflimlin surrounded by press. Formation of aircraft - General Leather Nose Tomazo arrived in Corsica - being greeted etc., also given tumultuous welcome - very good mass crowd scenes. Aerials of Constantine - again very good mass crowds chanting De Gaulle, banners, clapping etc. In Paris, mass crowds protesting against a de Gaulle taking over. Good shots of people joining hands. President Coty addresses French Assembly (silent). MCU de Gaulle.
