- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The French Crisis. DESCRIPTION: France has witnessed many a political crisis, in the post-war years, this was a crisis with a difference; that confronted Monsieur Gaillard’s eventual successor, Monsieur Pflimlin, the new Premier. The news came of a near-revolution, in Algeria. The Algerian questions has been the obstacle that one French Government, after another, has failed to surmount. Seven eighths of Algeria consists of Sahara Desert and beneath the sands of this desert lies wealth: OIL. Algeria is certainly vital, to French economy. There has been war since 1954, between the Nationalists, and the French Army. Now to the crisis: fears, that Pflimlin would not get his vote, or that he might abandon Algeria led General Massu, setting up a Committee of Public Safety, and the rioting increased in Algeria, the crisis was so acute, that President Coty himself called on the army; to remain loyal to the Government in Paris. There was a demand for General de Gaulle to take over, France faces a situation, of the utmost gravity. SHOTLIST: GV air shot of Paris. LS Eiffel Tower. Air shot section of Paris.
