Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Scientific Section International Geophysical Year. DESCRIPTION: Men and machines digging for atomic energy, at a uranium mine known as Rum Jungle, in North Australia. We are now living in the International Geophysical Year, and the launching of the first Earth Satellite will certainly be a red-letter day on the calendar. An animated diagram showed the sequence of the three-stage rocket breaking up. It increases its speed all the time, till it ejects the satellite into its orbit, three hundred miles up. This one’s in Australia. An Australian contribution to the 62-nation programme concerns the visual study of the distant stars. A giant telescope brings outer space into the scientists backyard. SHOTLIST: Various shots of men digging in mechanical machines at a Uranium mine. Rock in a digger being moved from the rock face and put into a lorry. Rock being moved along in the lorry by the digger. MCU Man sitting in the lorry. CU Sign STOP - Restricted Area etc. Treatment plant. Tank full of bubbling substances. Steam rising from container.
