Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: State Visit to Portugal. DESCRIPTION: The story opens with the arrival of the Viscount that flew Her Majesty to Montijo Airport, near Lisbon. The Duke of Edinburgh went quickly aboard to greet the Queen. This part of their visit to Portugal was private and there was little ceremony at the military airport. They were soon off on a 20 mile drive to the fishing port of Setubl to spend the week-end aboard Britannia. Meanwhile the beautiful city of Lisbon had been making preparations for the State visit of Britain’s Queen Isabel (as the Portuguese people call her). On the morning, when the State visit was to begin, the sun was shining; a public holiday had been declared, and everywhere troops were taking up their positions. The people of Lisbon were all set for the great spectacle hours in advance. The Royal Yacht Britannia steamed up the Tagus, saluted by the training ship Sagres. At the landing stage, the President and his wife were there to do the honours. The Queen and the Duke went ashore in the magnificent old State Barge, eighty sailors at the oars. All cameras were focused on the Royal party as they took their places for the march past. One highlight was a cavalry unit, with mounted band, going past at the canter. After the march past, the Queen and the President led the splendid procession of beautiful coaches, on the drive through the city. SHOTLIST: Viscount plane arriving at Montijo airport, near Lisbon.
