- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Report From Port Said. DESCRIPTION: A contingent from Norway was the first United Nations force in Port Said. Pictures of the extraordinary scene marking their arrival have already been shown, but since then more pictures of this episode have come in. They underline the fact that, while the mob of civilians howled and leapt about, Egyptian police did their best to exercise control. Not long afterwards, Major General Burns, Commander of the United Nations Emergency Force met General Sir Charles Keightley for a conference. As a token of our intention to withdraw, one battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment has left Port Said. The salvage work on Nasser’s blockships has been making progress. The fifteen hundred ton Hopper Triton has been lifted from the bottom. Another look at Port Said from the air, it gives the lie to Egyptian propaganda stories that a greater part of the town was destroyed. The only serious damage was among the flimsy structures of the Arab quarter, which caught fire. Water distribution was normal immediately after the action. Oil installations were still intact, and the same applies to other utilities in the town. SHOTLIST: Norwegians marching through Port Said. Egyptians demonstrate. Major General Burns disembarking from plane and met by General Sir Charles Keightley. British troops leaving with kitbags. Troops (Royal West Kent Regiment) boarding ship. Salvage work in progress on canal. Salvage ship Triton. Aerials of Port Said and canal. Various aerials of wrecked area, buildings, waterworks etc.
