MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Freighter’s Crew Rescued From Wreck. DESCRIPTION: When the 4,000 ton American freighter Grommet Reefer broke in two on the rocks off Leghorn in a gale, it was indeed a case of so near and yet so far. The crew of forty seamen stuck together on the after part of the ship and, although they were only about three hundred yards from the shore, the job of effecting their rescue was difficult and hazardous; in fact, it took thirty-six hours. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. CU Name Grommet Reefer. Ship broken in halves lays off shore. Crowds gathered on shore watching. Sea breaking over parts of ship. Line fired across, but failed. Men rescued by breeches buoy, to Italian Naval ship. US seaman climbs down rope ladder into water. Waves sweep right over him as he swims for launch, picked up by launch. Crew come ashore, none the worse for the experience.
