- May 4th: A German Colonel brings the Allied Command a note from Field Marshal Busch, Commander of the German forces in the Hamburg area, asking for a surrender to be arranged for the Germans. The German military delegation is driven thorough the Allied zone and officers go to Montgomery’s tent headquarters to discuss terms. Delegates include General Admiral von Friedeburg, Field Marshal Keitel and General Kinzel, Rear Admiral Wagner and Major Friedel. Montgomery receives the defeated enemy at 21st Army Group Headquarters, Lüneburg Heath.
