Summary
The Battle of the Scheldt Estuary. Allied troops drive onto the beaches; death charges; troops move towards Walcheren; battleships fire their guns; Allied planes (bombers) fly overhead. Initial landings made by Royal Marine Commandos, with the main assault from the Canadians. Flooding caused by Germans having cut the dykes of the island. The capture of the town of Middelburg. Two thousand German prisoners, including General Daser, German commander. The German prisoners ferry themselves in small boats to their captivity. Germans paraded through streets.
