- Greece. Commonwealth forces shipped across Mediterranean to help Greece (delayed German offensive against Russia for six weeks). British warships in the Battle of Matapan. British triumphs over Italian battleships - the Royal Navy helped by naval aircraft. Hitler invades Russia. Allies foil Axis attempt to dominate Syria, Iraq and Iranian oilfields. Allied occupy Madagascar and ensure supply lines to Russia and the Middle East. Alexander’s rearguard action in Burma saves India from the Japanese. American entry into war. The Casablanca meeting, with Churchill, Roosevelt and two French leaders meet in January 1943. The advance to Tripoli in October 1942.
