Summary
Introduction by Rt Hon Mr R G Casey, British Minister of State for the Middle East, who speaks of how War Pictorial News tries to give the true reflection of the pattern of events. The events leading up to the present stage of the war are shown retrospectively: Dunkirk - 1940. Loss of equipment. Britain stands alone. Luftwaffe attacks on London. Civilians organized to stand firm under bombing raids. Much is made of what is called Churchill’s strategic plan against the Axis powers, ie: to separate the Axis powers and place a ring of encirclement round Hitler’s Europe. This is illustrated by animated diagrams. Italy enters the war. A comparison is made between the naval and air strength of Italy and that of Britain. Despite superiority of Italian strength as expressed in numbers of planes and ships, the RAF and RN reduced Italian aircraft by half (despite its own lack of equipment). Spring 1941: Germans attack Malta; Malta fights back; by Spring 1942 many Axis aircraft are destroyed. The East African Campaign. Surrender of dignitaries at Keren. British troops, small in number, save the Sudan. Addis Ababa falls to British and Dominion forces; the liberation of Abyssinia; Haile Selassi. General Wavell, then Commander-in-Chief in Middle East, attacks Graziani’s army. Within eight weeks, despite superiority of Italian numbers, 130,000 prisoners taken by British. (End of First Libyan Campaign). US NATIONAL ARCHIVE ENTRY: 20 min, sd, B&W, 35mm On British campaigns in Africa. Reel 1. British warships fire anti-aircraft guns at attacking Italian planes. British and Ethiopian troops attack Italian positions in Ethiopia and enter Addis Ababa. Emperor Haile Selassi poses. British home guard units drill. Winston Churchill leaves No 10 Downing Street. Maps Axis conquests in Europe and Africa. Record Group 208 Accession III-NAV-262
