Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Coal Ownership Transferred. DESCRIPTION: The transfer of British Coal Mines to the National Coal Board has taken place with a ceremony conducted by Mr Shinwell. The Nationalisation was celebrated at the pits and the new flag was hoisted. SHOTLIST: KS GV Lansdowne House. On roof, Lord Hyndley, hoists National Coal Board flag, tilt up of flag being raised. Interior shots of Cabinet sitting, conversing about coal board. CU Mr Shinwell speaking, pan of Cabinet. Hugh Gaitskell at back in pan shot of Cabinet. Ernest Bevin enters and sits down, the person sitting next to him shakes his hand, Sir Stafford Cripps is on Bevin’s left. CU bound book of the Coal Nationalisation Act, Shinwell presents same to Hyndley. CU Bevin looks as though he’s asleep. MS & CU Attlee wishing everybody a happy new year in this new era, the above is in London. Also seen in Cabinet shots are Aneurin Bevan, Herbert Morrison, Arthur Greenwood. At Holmewood, near Chesterfield, GV of pit head, NCB flag being hoisted by miners, MS of flag flying. Miners descending after hoisting flag. Several shots of miners walking towards camera.
