Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Bread Rationing - Mr Strachey Explains. DESCRIPTION: The Minister of Food replies to housewives and explains why there is bread rationing. SHOTLIST: KS MS Strachey at desk. MS & SCU of Mrs Ramsden, seated at desk. She asks Mr Strachey sitting opposite her Why are you rationing bread? Strachey replies The reason we have got to ration bread is because we are short of wheat, what I mean by that is that our stock of wheat in the coming weeks will get to a point that if certain things happen and we do not ration we should get, or risk, the breakdown in distribution of bread, and that we are not prepared to risk. Should things like a strike or trouble in USA or Canada, or a bad harvest in this country etc., any of these things can happen . and so I refuse to risk etc. Now about rationing scheme . I think people will find that there is enough bread, if they remember that the family can get more bread by sacrificing points or vice versa . the family which finds it does not need all it’s bread can get some extra points . so the scheme is flexible . going back to the necessity of rationing . would you agree . Rationing is absolutely necessary as a safeguard to seeing that every family in this country is sure of its share of bread and one thing you can reply on . we shall take off bread rationing the very moment this is no longer necessary . SCU & CU of Strachey while he’s talking.
