- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Lovely Cottage Wins Grand National. DESCRIPTION: Movietone opens its first post war Season of Racing Events with the world’s Greatest Steeplechase, all the thrills and excitement of 1939 with a 1946 outlook. The favourite ‘Prince Regent’ finished third with ‘Lovely Cottage’ making a great final run to be first past the post. SHOTLIST: KS SV crowds in grandstand. GV crowds. MS board exhibiting riders and horses. Policeman stands outside stable on duty. Inside stable another walks up and down, guarding horses. Elevated shot of crowds thronging round "bookies". CU "bookie" taking a bet, exchange notes. Various GV crowds shots which show many new fashions, especially hats, worn by women. Horses with their names displayed on them, parade round paddock, without jockeys. Jockeys come out (into camera). Jockey mounts. Elevated shot of Prince Regent along course to starting post. Two elevated shots of horses cantering down to starting post. Crowds line rails. Horses line up and start of race, in and out of camera. Taking first Jump. Ambulance crew run across to jockey lying flat on ground. 3rd Jump - Closure, Jock and Historical Revue fall. Becher’s Brook, Symbole falls and is killed. Other horses over Becher’s (slow motion), Alacrity falls, jockey falls clear. Lough Conn takes lead. Over Canal Turn jump. Slow motion. Taking Valentines. Horses take 12th few fall, many loose horses. Lough Conn still in lead, pan. Elevated shot of horses taking several jumps. Over water jump. Cut-in crowds, close up. Loose horse falls into water. Lough Conn falls, Slow motion over jump. Many horses and jockeys fall at jump with many open gaps in same. Loose horse by-pass 20th jump. Slow motion horses over Becher’s Brook, jockey falls off, horse falls on top of jockey and remains there. Horses taking Canal Turn. Slow motion over Valentines. Many loose horses still in running. Pan of Limestone Edward and Prince Regent going up to take lead. SCU panning shot Prince Regent’s jockey looking round as horse race on in the lead. Over last (30th) jump, Prince Regent, then Lovely Cottage followed by Jack Finlay. Elevated shot of horses coming into the straight, Lovely Cottage overtakes Prince Regent, then Jack Finlay also overtakes him, finish of race Lovely Cottage, Jack Finlay and 3rd Prince Regent, who faded badly. Winner canters in escorted by Mounted Police. Crowds throng round him. In unsaddling enclosure, jockey dismounts, kisses horse’s mane and walks into stable. Winning jockey was Captain Petre.
