- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: German Chaos West of the Rhine. DESCRIPTION: The Allies have closed up to the Rhine all the way from Arnhem to within a mile of Coblenz. This has involved very heavy fighting by part of the Canadian and United Kingdom troops driving the Germans back from their Wesel bridgehead. The Americans entered Bonn with very little resistance, although the Hun managed to destroy the Rhine bridge. Also taken by the Americans was the town of Bad Godesberg, venue for the 1938 meeting between Hitler and Chamberlain. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GV Battlefield. Various shots around Xanten, shows ruins, wrecked German guns, American troops pass through town of Xanten, on wall sign Rheims. Equipment passes through town of Xanten, armoured cars, jeeps etc. Signpost Xanten. Convoy through Roman arches in town. British & Canadian infantry march along outside town. At Bonn, (Beethoven’s birthplace), various shots of ruined town, also wrecked bridge across Rhine, SCU of water & pan up to ruined bridge. At Remagen, American infantry across fields. Shots of intact Remagen bridge, LS of near misses against bridge, ack-ack gunners in action. American infantry march across bridge, German prisoners come from other direction. Some run across fields. At Rudenach, Allied prisoners, all nationalities, along roads, some with dog-carts, all released by Allied advance. Form groups in Rudenach Square, smile at German prisoners lined up opposite them. CU types of German prisoners. On outskirts of village, Yanks follow Sherman tanks across shooting out snipers, several run across fields surrendering. GV placard on wall, Jeeps through town. At Bad Godesberg, tanks pass through, Americans look for snipers, run, scurry, etc., through town firing machine guns, usual street fighting. CU name of Rhine Hotel Dreesen (this is where Chamberlain met Hitler in 1938). Various shots of prisoners taken from hotel. People hang out white flags, shot of street flying white flags. Various shots of civilians either hanging out white flags or waving same.
