Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Caen Liberated (GR Title - Mud Bath in Battle for Caen). DESCRIPTION: Recent heavy rains in Normandy meant another battle, that with the mud. The battle for Caen was preceded by a real Montgomery barrage. Everywhere prisoners were taken making the total taken in Normandy by the 5th July over fifty thousand. The fall of Caen was nearly accomplished with the German army in retreat to the south of the river Orne. SHOTLIST: Cut story - British patrol walk into camera through mud. AFU - CU feet marching through mud. Shots of muddy road, transport passes through, jeep out of camera, through ditch on side of road. Bulldozer clears mud from roads. Shermans through streets of mud. French refugees return to homes, through muddy streets, on carts, walking etc. GS countryside. Various shots of artillery open fire, also "Priests" firing. Dawn shot of barrage, also silhouette of soldiers looking up at sky. Lancasters pass over. AFU - Flares fall to earth. Lancasters fly through flak. More flares falling, background smoke rises. Carpiquet airfield. GS Typhoons into camera. Aerial shot of Carpiquet airfield, Typhoons fire rockets at same, rockets leave trail & hitting target, explosions. AFU - shots of several Shermans along road & CU passing camera. Dust caused by Shermans. Stewart tanks, followed by infantry along road. British infantry crawl through cornfield. AFU - Various shots of tanks & infantry advance over fields etc. Soldiers machine gun dugout. POW marched into town, French woman at window sticks up four fingers at them. Elevated LS of Caen. Sherman followed by infantry along road, past ruins, street fighting. Shots of ruins. AFU more ruins of Caen. Caen signpost damaged, Shermans along road, Sherman pushes wall over to end.
