MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Clearing New Britain. DESCRIPTION: From Cape Gloucester on one side and Bougainville on the other the Allies have driven against the base at Rabaul. Marines successfully captured the beachhead but the drive inland lay through jungle and swamp and over mountain. SHOTLIST: Cut story - GS map of Pacific, indicating New Britain, & fade to CU of New Britain arrows indicating Cape Gloucester, & Bougainville. CU Major General Rupertus on deck looks through field glasses. CU American Stars & Stripes. Aerial shots of Liberators, dropping bombs. Aerial shots of New Britain, pattern bombing of same. Line ahead of warships. LS of smoke off coast. Cruisers & warships, firing broadsides. Marines run along deck of LST board LCIs. Various shots of LCIs approaching shores, several shots of Marines coming ashore. GS of Marines advancing behind Sherman tanks, inland; tanks & Marines firing their guns. LCI approach shores firing tracers. Army transport comes ashore. Sherman tank along beach. Advance through jungles. Firing mortars. Shots of dead Japs in trenches, & dugouts. Panning shots of crashed Jap planes. Marines advance through swamps, into camera. Various shots of same, shows RM. shoulder deep in water. Shots of them marching through mud, swamps etc. Shot of Jeep with single files of Marines each side into camera to finish. Troops are approaching Rabaul.
