MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Bloody Battle for Tarawa. DESCRIPTION: The engagement at Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands proved to be one of the bloodiest battles of the war. When the US Marines closed the beach-head at Betio, they found it well protected and desperately defended. The capture of Tarawa clinched the American occupation of the Gilbert group. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GS of convoy with destroyer in fore. LS of convoy on horizon. In cabin aboard ship. CU Rear Admiral Hill, & CU Major General JC Smith of US Marines. LS of bomber flying in formation overhead. Various shots of naval craft firing broadsides etc. GS of guns firing broadsides. GS of machine gun fire hitting sea close to ship. Look down shot of marines on rafts making for beaches, also LCI pulling away from ships & various of battle in progress as they approach the beaches. Various shots of explosions. Smoke screen on beach, explosions, Royal Marines wade ashore, off LCI. Marines crawl forward up the beach. Various shots of advance action, troops being given medical attention. Firing small artillery. Troops along beaches, shots of explosions caused by our planes. Various pans of battlefield, shows wreckage complete, includes shots of coastal guns which are of British origin, captured at Singapore, panning shots of coastal gun. Captured Korean labourers seated on beach. Marines working to repair airfield, bulldozers etc. Jeep loaded with Marines across aerodrome to first plane to land, carrying pilot shoulder high, finishing on GS of pilot with Marines grouped around him.
