Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: ‘Reading Behind the Lines’ (No 1). DESCRIPTION: America is expanding it’s Airborne troops and dogs are among the new recruits. General Montgomery crosses to the Italian mainland. In Denmark the citizens of Copenhagen show their unswerving loyalty for King Christian. From Bulgaria comes the news of the death of King Boris. SHOTLIST: Newspapers turned over. Troop carrying planes into camera. Paratroops from same. One comes down with US flag. Dog jumps and floats to earth. Montgomery boards Naval Launch. Salutes Naval Officers. Launch flies Montgomery’s own pennant and tows a ‘duck’ [sic]. General under gun, looks through glasses at coast, and CU. ‘Duck’ going ashore at Italy. Troops along beach single file. Montgomery and officers study map on beach. General watches troops march along streets and waves to them. Fires on shore at Palermo, naval craft in fore. Shipping on fire in harbour. Naval man looks through glasses. Terrific explosion. Crowds round King Christian on horseback and CU. King Boris meets Hitler and shakes with Nazi officials. Sicily Bombing - CARD 44000 (Pathe US) Cut story - Bombing at dawn of Palermo. Ships burning in harbour. Terrific explosion when one ship is hit, VG. ‘Invasion Of Italy’ - CARD 43994 (AFU) General Montgomery ashore amongst his men (Italy). Travels in a Naval Motor Launch, towing ‘Duck’. General boards the launch. Stands in bows and looks through field glasses. His own pennant flies above White Ensign and shot of ‘Duck’ in tow. General in main streets of Reggio, waves to column of troops, single file. Pan of White Ensign over town. LS of harbour full of wrecked ships. General out of ‘Duck’ helped by Italian POW’s and enters house. LS of beach shows landing craft disembarking. Troops greeted by civilians and given grapes. Infantry march up beach. General plans operations. Spread out map by roadside. Enemy aircraft bomb beaches. Bombs explode in sea. ALC across Straits. General in launch. Barrage fired from Sicily. Ships in first light of morning go in and out with supplies and troops. LCIs lined up in harbour with troops in background. Troops down slope to harbour. Troops board LCIs. Air raid over Catania. Night barrage across Straits. ALC come ashore. Searching for mines on beach. Bulldozer tows vehicle, which is bogged. LCI runs onto beach - ramp lowered. Prisoners. LTC towards Italy. Signs of Naval smoke screen. Telephoto shot of enemy ammunition fire. Landing on Italy. Men disembarking. CU type shots. Amphibious jeeps landing. Look down shot of ALC’s in harbour. Troops on beaches. CU tank wheels ashore. Tanks ashore from TLCs. Ships in Straits of Messina. Look down shot of tank off TLC. Ducks ashore, one into camera. General Montgomery leaves HQ by car. Canadian officers confer. O/C Royal 22nd Regiment with Brigadier. Major General Simmonds at Observation Post overlooks Italian coast. Artillery barrage on Reggio di Calabria. ALC’s to and from Italy. Troops on beaches. Landings. Jeeps along beach. Jeeps and troops from landing craft. Canadians Royal 22nd Regiment and West Nova Scotia Regiment land near Reggio. CU types. Big gun ashore. Tank off TLC. Montgomery converses with Canadian Brigadier, under trees. Montgomery climbs into ‘Duck’. Men of Carleton and York Regiment on aerodrome captured by them, sit on wrecked Italian aircraft. Wounded in hospital. Night barrage. Shot across Straits. Landing craft under way. Artillery firing in Sicily. Two British destroyers sailing through Straits. Naval Control tower - CU Commander EJ Tumlyn directing operations. Observation Post in Sicily and vehicles on roads (Castle Hill). Lt General AGL McNaughton and Major General Simonds interview by the Press. Groups of officers. ALC’s on Sicilian beaches. Vehicles on beaches. Shot of Sicily, taken from ship along coast. US Paratroops - CARD 43995 (Pathe US) US Airborne troops on the march. Troops carrying planes in formation over Mount Rushmore. over the prairie paratroops infantry jump to earth. One comes down with flag. Dog comes down to earth carrying Red Cross First Aid supplies. CU dog, which is incidentally an Airedale. King Boris And Christian - CARD 43999 (Pathe US) King Christian on horseback. CU through crowds, etc. King Boris out of train, greeted by Hitler. Shakes with various Nazi officials. This was a captured German reel.
