- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Take the tropical loveliness of the South Seas, add Alpine ruggedness, and you have Madeira, the island they call the Pearl of the Atlantic. The market in capital Funchal is the showplace for the island’s exotic produce, but grapes you will find everywhere, for wine has become Madeira’s most famous product. Contrast the opulence of a religious thanksgiving procession at fiesta time and the placid resignation of the street-side knife grinder with his clap-trap machinery. Watch the whole family turning the making of wicker work and tapestry into a social affair. Visit the fishing village of Camara de Lobos where the sun-baked stones provide a sort of primitive launderette. And take a trip to the North of the island, where time has almost stood still, and teeter on the crater of a long-extinct volcano.
