- Commentary: Pathe Pictorial takes you on a magic carpet to a holiday resort which hides behind a garrison town. At first sight, the familiar red pillar-box and copper’s helmet makes the visitor think that it’s a corner of Britain. But what about that sun! Never in this country has the sun so delightfully warmed the backs of holiday-makers. In fact, this is the tiny colony of Gibraltar. The strategic fortress, washed by the tides of both Mediterranean and Atlantic, today lies sleeping, welcoming visitors who come to marvel at its unexpected loveliness. It’s a playground of gardens, exciting deep-sea fishing, fascinating shops, and gharri rides. The garden cemetery, where lie buried in honour the men who died in Nelson’s great victory at Trafalgar, has become a shrine to be visited by every new arrival. Behind everything on the Rock breathes the living history of a great fortress: memories of the four-year siege two centuries ago; the apes which, legend says, must stay alive if Britain is to retain possession; and the bustle of a great naval base. Across the frontier lies Spain, with its vineyards, bull-fights, and a labour force which pours into Gibraltar every morning. The colony is small and crowded - yet a visitor can for walk for hours in solitude.
