- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Libya Invaded. First Pictures. DESCRIPTION: General Sir Claude Auchinleck went up to the forward areas in the Western Desert not long before the offensive opened. Whilst there he presented gallantry medals to three New Zealand officers for their part in the Crete Campaign. The fleet took a large part in the operation by bombarding the Axis positions from the sea. Ashore, General Cunningham’s artillery was busy putting on a pretty good show for the benefit of the Germans and Italians. SHOTLIST: Auchinleck presents medal. General Cunningham arrives in a launch and goes aboard a battleship where he meets his brother, Admiral Cunningham. (These are the first shots we have had of the two leaders together and should be remembered). The fleet puts to sea and by night the bombardment starts. Night firing scenes. Ashore, batteries blaze away and shell-bursts are filmed. Troops advance through smoke screen and a conference is held while American "Honey" tanks advance. Lorries loaded with troops, cross the wire and the story ends with troops marching and close-up of General Cunningham - this is the best we have had. NZ Tank Manoeuvres - CARD 41670 Various shots of light tanks advancing through a mine field and past the wire. The material was partially used in the "Libya Invasion" story.
