Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Fishing in the Desert. DESCRIPTION: During a lull in the fighting the men spend their time sleeping and fishing. The tailor does a good trade and there’s plenty of work for the blacksmith. SHOTLIST: The men fish on the beach and one ties the line to his foot and goes to sleep. The cook waits but as there is no catch they have to eat Bully again. Desert Tailor - CARD 41590 Various shots of a soldier being measured for new clothes. Desert Blacksmith - CARD 41589 Under the palm tree the men work at the forge. A lorry draws up and is repaired. Water Distilling - CARD 41592 Lighter Side of Western Desert. Commentary: Even more important to an army in the desert is water. Its rationed, of course, but troops near the coast often get extra rations by distilling their own drinking water from the sea water. Its boiled in a large drum, the fuel is waste oil and the steam goes through pipes to condensers. Film Stars In The Desert - CARD 41593 Various shots of film-stars photographs which have been put inside hats. One bright lad has a photo of his favourite on a stand so that she is always before him even when he sleeps. Desert Pilots’ Mess - CARD 41594 Various shots of the desert mess which is used for both officers and sergeant pilots. The men laugh, play and drink together. One shot shows the board being taken down and the "Pilots’" substituted for "Officers".
