- Summary
- Extensive damage to the port and harbour installations of Cherbourg presents a big job for the naval salvage squads. Sunken vessels in the harbour acted as block ships to harass the allies’ arrival and the famous Clock Tower has been demolished. In the fortresses on the breakwater enclosing the outer harbour Germans are still putting up resistance. Artillery pounds the fortresses and the dive bombers go over to the finish the job. Marauders over Normandy bomb German escape routes and attempts to get to the Channel Islands are frustrated. American fighters attacking everything they see, marshalling yards, German convoys on road, etc.
