- Summary
- Mr Churchill was in Quebec when the news of Italy’s capitulation was received. He is seen driving through Quebec’s streets and receiving great reception by the crowds. President Roosevelt in Ottawa addresses the two Houses of the Canadian Parliament. He thanks the people of Canada for their hospitality and says that the talks he has had with the Canadian Government have been in the manner of members of the same family. He says they have been forced to call out, what they in the US would call the Sheriff and his posse to break up the gang in order that gangsterism may be eliminated. "We actually are going to be rid of the outlaws this time". It was on the day that Britain commemorated its declaration of war on Germany that the Allied invasion of the Italian mainland commenced, and it was on that same day that Italy capitulated and accepted the Casablanca terms of surrender. From the radio came the voice of General Eisenhower telling of Italy’s exit from the war. Actual landings by night and day by British and Canadians of the 8th Army together with the 7th and 5th American armies. Combined operations by the army, navy and air force, led to a combined Victory.
